Context: This lesson would be taught during the study of the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller. This lesson is appropriate for students in a high school junior English class. The students in this class come from a suburban environment, and are of mixed gender, race, and include persons with disabilities.

Objective: This is a student discovery lesson that explores the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The students will apply their knowledge and what they have learned from the play. Also, they will have the opportunity to practice their MLA documentation skills, grammar and mechanics, and other aspects of paper writing.

Pass Objectives: This lesson meets Reading/Literature Standard 1, Objective 2 and 5; Standard 2, objective 2, A, B and D, objective 3; Standard 3, objective 2, E; Standard 4, objective 1, Writing/Grammar/Mechanics and Usage Standard 1, objective 1, 3, 4-6; Standard 2, objective 1, 3, and 5; and Standard 3 for 11th Grade language arts. http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/PASS/Subject/langarts.pdf

Procedure
Introduction: I begin by asking the class to take out their journal and a pencil and give them ten minutes to write on the journal prompt:
“Please respond to this poem. Relate aspects of this poem to the characters in The Crucible. (full text of Anne Sexton’s poem “You all Know the Story of the Other Woman”)”
Afterwards I ask for volunteers to share and try to get at least a 5 minute discussion going about the journal prompt.

Modification: I could also read the poem aloud to aid those with visual impairments, in addition to pulling the poem up on the Smartboard.

Independent Practice: Give the class a handout with the assignment instructions and grading rubric for the Salem Newsletter assignment. I will explain to them that they will have the remainder of class today to work on the newsletter in the computer lab. They should research 1600s Salem Massachusetts to get ideas about what their newsletter will say. Their newsletter will be one page with two main articles, each 250 words. The side adds and pictures need to be filled in with advertisements that fit the time period. Then I would release them to go into the computer lab.
Conclusion: Remind them that they will have 20 minutes at the beginning of class tomorrow to finish their work before they present. If they don’t think they will be able to finish in the class time allotted tomorrow, they should work on it at home. Remind them to save their work.

Assessment: No assessment today!
